Listening to Young Atheists

At a time when Christianity appears to be in full retreat in today’s culture, Larry Taunton, a regular contributor to USA Today, The Atlantic, and CNN.com, decided to listen to Christianity’s most vocal critics-the prominent leaders of secular humanist clubs at the top universities. What he learned was striking: Christianity’s most articulate despisers were once Christians themselves. They didn’t leave the church because the youth group wasn’t fun enough. Instead, these Christians on the way out the church door uniformly couldn’t find anyone who would both listen to their doubts and offer solid, biblically informed responses. Listening to Young Atheists chronicles what Larry learned from these interviews and how these insights can make Christianity stronger. A faith that won’t listen to doubts is destined for the dustbin of history. The good news is the reasonable arguments for Christianity are stronger than ever, if only we learn how to create a place for people to listen to them.
